Large framed map of the province of New Jersey divided into east and west commonly called the Jerseys. 2nd edition with considerable improvements. Has a notation on the back of the frame "Map of East & West Jersey, London 1778. This map was drawn from the survey made in 1769 by order of the Commissioners appointed to settle the partition line between the provinces of New York and New Jersey by Lieut Bernard Ratzer: and from another survey of the northern parts in possession of the Earl of Dunmore". There is a signature underneath written on linen Lt Col Greinfield. Engraved and published by William Faden, Charing Cross. December 1, 1778. Is a great rare example of the 2nd edition. Issued 12 months after the first edition. Is based upon Ratzer surveys in 1769, which were conducted to resolve a 100 year long boundary dispute between New York and New Jersey. Faden's map was the first to show New Jersey's northern border with New York, and also shows the area as known to George Washington just before the battle of Monmouth and a fortified Valley Forge. It is the most important map of the area from the Revolutionary period, and was also the largest map of New Jersey that had ever been produced. Has some creasing and wear on the border.
