EPHEMERA LOT, CIVIL WAR ERA U.S.S.S. LANCASTER JOURNAL, PHOTO ALBUM AND CERTIFICATE.

Description: 1) A hardbound 146-page hand written account of a Civil War Era cruise on the U. S. S. Frigate Lancaster beginning on October 3, 1864. Titled ìTwo Years In The Pacificî by Second Lieutenant, Marine - Frank D. Webster, Assistant-Surgeon (identified on page 89). The log has several drawings, a few watercolors and bookplate etchings. Content: On pages 86 ñ 87 is a step-by-step account on how they captured Confederate soldiers (ìThe Salvador Piratesî) on the Panama Railroad Company's steamer Salvador including: ìCaptain Hoggís confessionî of intending to ìkill Captain Douglass of the Salvador and his officers, seize the ship and prey on all vessels they came across in this oceanî. There is further mention that the prisoners were kept on board for a month and then sent off to San Francisco on the U.S.S. Saginaw. There is an account of the disturbance on the Isthmus, many notations of spending time in various ports including drawings of native huts and accounts of scenery; a pilot boarding the ship at the Golden Gate, who gives the first news heard of the assassination of President Lincoln (a month after the incident), which ìbrought sadness throughout the shipî. Webster writes of his time and the beauty of San Francisco Bay as well as the city itself, ìmoney flows like waterî and various overland trips by stage coach in California; then their long voyage to Hawaii by way of Panama (new orders received) and details and interactions on the Hawaiian Islands, including a ìformal presentation to His Majesty King Kamehameha Vî, on December 20th 1865, joined by Admiral Pearson and other officers as well as the visit the King made to the ship on the 22nd. The journal ends abruptly just after New Yearís Day, 1866 readying for a horseback excursion to a volcano from the port of Hilo. Frank D. Webster retired as Captain on April 1st, 1884. 2) Frank D. Websterís leather bound photo album with an image of the U.S.S. Frigate Lancaster inscribed: ìPresented to me by Gunner Watkins, October 26, 1864î several photos of Civil War officers (one presumably himself), an image of King Kamehameha V, family members and album views of Panama, San Francisco and California. 3) Framed WWI Certificate ìMerit Roll Boston Navy Yard War Serviceî for Thomas F. Flanagan, circa 1920. SIZE: 1.) 12-1/2î x 9-1/2î; 2.) 8î x 6-1/4î; 3.) 8î x 10î. CONDITION: 1) In good overall, typical for age with strong ink color; 2.) Separations, images good; 3.)
