Engraved Colt Model 1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver with Patriotic Eagle Relief Carved Grip, Case and Holster This Colt Model 1849 Pocket was manufactured in 1863 and was factory engraved by Gustave Young's shop. The floral scroll engraving has a dog head design worked into the scrollwork on the left side of the barrel lug and hammer that is typical of Gustave Young engraved percussion Colt revolvers. A shell design is present on the sides and top of the back strap. The cylinder has the scroll engraving. See the Colt shooting prize Model 1851 revolver on page 59 in "The Book of Colt Engraving" by R. L. Wilson for very similar patterns. The left side of the frame is marked "COLTS/PATENT," and the top barrel flat is marked with the one-line New York address. It has the standard post and notch sights. The grip has a high relief shield and eagle motif on the left side. It has a "P" marking by the matching serial numbers found on the barrel, frame and trigger guard. Matching numbers are also found on the back strap, wedge and arbor pin. The replacement cylinder has the number "35088," and the loading lever is unnumbered. It comes with a black leather holster with an eagle "A" brass stud and a red wine velvet lined partitioned case holding a Hicks percussion cap tin, double eagle powder flask and double cavity Colt's patent brass bullet mold. The top of the lid has a presentation oval which reads, "St. Mary's Hospital/San Francisco." Originally opened on July 27, 1857, by the Sisters of Mercy, St. Mary's Hospital was the first Catholic hospital on the Pacific Coast and remains operational under the leadership of Dignity Health. It is the oldest continuously operating hospital in San Francisco. Manufacturer: Colt Model: 1849 BBL: 5 inch octagon Stock: Gauge: 31 percussion Finish: blue/casehardened/silver Grips: antique ivory Serial Number: 234825P Class: Antique Condition: Good. The revolver has a smooth gray patina with a crisp engraving. The grip straps retain traces of darkened original silver plating in the protected areas, otherwise an attractive patina. The slightly shrunken grip is very fine with barely noticeable initials marked near the top (left side) and some minor handling marks and having an attractive color and grain pattern. The eagle is crisp. Mechanically fine. The loading lever assembly is an artificially aged modern replacement. The aged cracked holster is fair. The relined case is very good with a cracked bottom panel and minor handling/storage marks.
