Lot 138: Japanese WW II Sword (12 views)

Japanese WW II Sword
Description: See detailed photos for all parts of sword, tang & scabbard. Sword measures 38 3/8" long (not accounting for curvature). The first several tang closeups below show the LEFT side of the tang, as held. Makers mark is shown, as is a row of signature characters, although they are somewhat indistinct.
  • Condition: Excellent. Guaranteed genuine...NOT a reproduction.
  • Notes: The tang bears small mark under the tsuba guard resembling the circular, fluted outline of a leaf or flower, with three tiny squares inside. As noted above, there are Japanese characters visible but indistinct, also on the left side of the tang. Overall color of the tang is "silvery", with some orangish rust highlights. Our opinion is mid- to -late WW II origin, possibly older. We also noticed a loose, 4" bamboo shim tucked up inside the handle.
  • Provenance: Brought back by a suburban Philadelphia WW II vet, now deceased; Part of the Estate which populates this auction.
