There remains some speculation regarding the source of this piece as it very similar to the Baneda 595-8" vase but there is no known record of this form in the Roseville factory pages. Some feel it is a Weller form, but the truth is still a mystery. This exact piece is pictured on page 258 of Bassett's "Understanding Roseville Pottery."

Striking Owens charger decorated by Anna Fulton Best depicting a maiden or more appropriately, an enchantress, walking through a field of flowers with a wooded forest behind her. Done on white clay, the entirety of the artwork is finished in light blue, slate and white slip. An absolute treasure and premiere example of turn-of-the-century American Art Pottery from the Zanesville area. Signed AF Best by the artist, but otherwise unmarked. There are some spots of glaze loss to the rim of the charger, but no damage or problems affecting the integrity of the piece or the artwork. 13 1/4" in diameter.

McCoy "Sand Dollar" floor vase or necco jar. Hard to find semi-matte yellow color. Marked USA. Excellent condition. 14" tall.

Rookwood architectural faience installation with a large oval center and ten surrounding border pieces, utilizing no fewer than seven colors. The center piece has a green parrot, in high relief, looking among blue and yellow flowers. Any markings are obscured by the installation cement. A few of the border pieces have been professionally restored by Weibold Studio of Cincinnati. The center piece with parrot measures 23 1/2" wide by 13 3/4" high. The total size is 27 1/2" wide by 17 3/4" high by 3" thick. When discovered, this piece was mounted in the ground, being used as a bird bath. Its latest use was that of a table. Although not pictured, the winning bidder with have the option of taking the composite base and oval glass top to continue its duty as a table. In addition to being quite large in size, the weight of this piece is substantial, tipping the scale at nearly 60 pounds.

Tall and exceptional Weller Dickensware vase featuring an expertly carved scene. A man, in period clothing, has apparently stepped aside from a path to yield to a lady who is glancing back at him. A house sits at the end of the path with three cattle nearby. Surprisingly, this piece does not appear to be artist signed, but was certainly executed by one of Weller's master artisans. Marked with impressed Teco mark and an incised 87. The top rim, some of the buttresses and the base have been professionally restored, which are virtually invisible when displayed. 12 1/8" tall. It is important to note that a Teco vase of this same form with a significant chip to the rim was recently sold online. This is not the same vase, having come from a private collection in northern Ohio. In our opinion, this vase exhibits a much better (richer) glaze and the restoration is of excellent professional quality.

Very tall, colorful and elaborately decorated vase by Frederick Hurten Rhead. Rhead has decorated one side with a floral motif including large blossoms and leaves while the other side depicts a scene with a peacock in the foreground and a castle and body of water with small boats in the background. Signed F.H. Rhead, this piece is most likely a piece Wileman and Company's Foley Faience. Rhead served as an apprentice under his father, Frederick Alfred Rhead, between 1896 and 1898 and Wileman when he was approximately 16 to 18 years old. The handles have been professionally restored. Additionally, the base that the vase sits on was modeled and made to replace the original base, which was previously crushed. 31" tall.

Undoubtedly the most unusual and perhaps the most significant piece of Rick Wisecarver's work we have ever sold. This large, entirely hand-built scene depicts a large dinosaur next to its offspring, which is being pursued by a predator. While we don't have a paleontologist on staff, it's our estimation that the parent and offspring are Brachiosaurus while the predator is an Allosaurus. Signed Rick Wisecarver and R Sims, Hand Sculptured Very Spicial One of a Kind Dec. 29 89. Two fronds of the tree have been broken off and glued back in place. Additionally, the bottom corners of the piece, below the top level of the wooden base, have cleaved loose, but still display well. The pottery portion itself is 15" tall by 13" wide. With the wooden base, it stands 16 1/2" tall by 15" wide. An acrylic display case is included with the piece, but not show in the photo. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the size, weight and extremely fragile nature of this piece, conventional shipping methods are not available for this lot.

Roseville Rozane (Light) vase with expertly-decorated roses in slate blue and white on a background of the same slate blue fading to cream. Interesting Crystalis 19-12 1/2" form with three arm-like handles. The vase is signed H.L. by the artist, which could be Harry Larzelere, but the initials do not match his document monogram. Marked with Rozane Ware wafer and an impressed 7. Mint and uncrazed with some minute pops to the glaze. 12 1/4" tall. A very similar piece is shown on page 71 of Bassett's Understanding Roseville Pottery. That particular piece is listed as Azurean with a slightly richer blue color, but is marked the same as this vase. Since this piece is more of a slate blue as opposed to an azure blue, the identification as Rozane (Light) is probably more appropriate.

Exceptionally rare decorated Roseville Mongol vase by Mignon Martineau. While nearly every piece of Mongol that we have ever seen is simply glazed in the oxblood red glaze, this piece has been decorated with grapes and leaves on a vine and signed, "M." Originally owned by John J. Herold, who developed the Mongol glaze, which was an award winning entry at the 1904 World Fair (Bassett, Understanding Roseville Pottery, p. 54). This vase is accompanied by a copy of a signed note, tracing the piece through Herold's family until 1985 when it was sold to a pottery dealer. The consignor of this vase bought it from that dealer years ago and it is now on the market for the first time in over 20 years. Lightly marked 956, which corresponds to the Rozane shape number 956-8 1/2". There is a shallow 1/8" flake to the edge of the base and some scratches to the glaze. 8" tall. Very little is known about Mignon Martineau. In fact, the very few references with any information about Martineau are inconsistent as to whether Mignon was male or female. Two sources (Alice Irma Prather-Moses, "The International Dictionary of Women Workers in the Decorative Arts," 1981 and Anna L. Cobb, Editor & Head of the Normal Dept., Cleveland School of Art, "The School Arts Magazine," September, 1918) both indicate Martineau was a "Miss." David Karel ("Dictionnaire des artistes de langue francaise en Ame´rique du Nord : peintres, sculpteurs, dessinateurs, graveurs, photographes et orfe`vres," 1992) refers to Martineau's mark as "his mark" and dates Martineau's employment at Roseville from 1900 to 1918, both of which seem erroneous. We do know that based on the former two sources that Martineau was teaching art in Wichita Falls, Texas, by 1917, with a woman photographed in the high school yearbook. Therefore, Martineau seems to have been a woman whose employment at Roseville ended prior to 1917.
